A false start? Many feel that the musical landscape has regained its colors. Clubs are reopening, albums are being released, dozens of tours are scheduled... All this effervescence could make the successive confinements seem like a distant era. The reality is quite different. If many artists are back on their feet, the sector remains extremely fragile. In the United States, bands like Guns N'Roses, Korn, Slipknot, Metallica are playing at full speed in packed stadiums, but the slightest suspicion of a Covid case within the band causes the machine to stop for a while...

A false start?

Many people feel that the musical landscape has recovered. Clubs are reopening, albums are being released, dozens of tours are scheduled... All this effervescence could make the successive confinements seem like a distant era. The reality is quite different. If many artists are back on their feet, the sector remains extremely fragile. In the United States, bands like Guns N'Roses, Korn, Slipknot and Metallica are playing at full speed in packed stadiums, but the slightest suspicion of a Covid case within the group causes the machine to stop for a while. The result: the whole band is isolated in hotels, a few shows are postponed, and then the locomotive starts moving again. This is a luxury that few tour operators and artists can afford, as you need to be financially strong to face such constraints. Mike Portnoy recently raised the issue after the umpteenth postponement of his concert dates: "People are exposing themselves to Covid, even if they are vaccinated. One guy gets it and the tour falls apart. Look at Kiss, after two or three shows, Paul Stanley got infected and they had to stay in a hotel for a week. Then, just as they were about to hit the road again, Gene Simmons tested positive as well. Just the thought of having to quarantine yourself in a hotel, putting the whole team, the equipment, the trucks and everything else on hold, it's scary... We really want to play, we're dying to go. But is it worth the risk, both health-wise and financially?"
Hard... However, we won't lie to ourselves, this semblance of "return to normal" and the reunion with some musicians in flesh and blood in clubs, studios and hotel bars make us feel great! And above all, we are counting the days until we meet again with many of you at the Bag'Show at the Trianon in Paris. A nice symbol for our community.
