Interviewing Nic Collins, youngest son of Phil Collins (and current Genesis drummer) and Rufus Taylor, offspring of a certain Roger Taylor of Queen (and drummer of the British band The Darkness) within a few days of each other, gave rise to some thoughts within our team. We thought about Jason Bonham's confessions in our columns a decade ago, where he underlined the difficulty of blossoming in the face of his father's talent and fame.
When a child grows up in the shadow of an imposing and admired parent, can he or she really break free? From Mike Portnoy to his son Max, Ringo Starr to Zak Starkey, Kofi Baker to his father Ginger (the Cream legend), or Jay Weinberg to his father Max... iconic father/son duos are particularly numerous in the drumming world. Whether in the artistic field or elsewhere, if some parents' jobs can be a source of suffering for their children, it is not uncommon for them to choose the same path. How can we explain, for example, that people who have been flayed like Jason Bonham or Kofi Baker have chosen the same profession, while claiming to have had a hard time of it? Others, on the other hand, have built up an incredible relationship of trust like the Collins, Escovedo (Sheila E. and her father Pete) and Porcaro (Jeff and Joe)... We have investigated this phenomenon through the decades.
