Fifteen seconds is the duration of Clyde Stubblefield's solo on James Brown's "Funky Drummer" (1970), a beat of goldsmithery recognizable among thousands, full of ghost notes and syncopations, which will lead him to become the most sampled drummer in history. Indeed, with the advent of the hip-hop movement and the democratization of loops in the 80's, this groove will be used excessively by mainstream artists (Public Enemy, Run-DMC, LL Cool J, Beastie Boys, Prince...) without Stubblefield receiving a single cent of royalties, the latter taking advantage of a legal vacuum on the issue of sampling at that time.

Almost 60 years after the birth of funk, all popular music is impregnated with these hypnotic rhythms whose particular swing is based on the first beat (the famous concept of "The One" developed by James Brown). That being said, there is a world of difference between knowing the musical theory behind these patterns and actually making a funk groove sound like it has soul... Like rock, funk has its heroes, and we wanted to shine a spotlight on them. Batterie Magazine looks back at the indisputable legacy of these drummers and the emblematic albums that changed the game, tracing the incredible funk odyssey.
Also in this issue, the Bag'Show report, our meeting with Jamison Ross from Snarky Puppy, scores and advices from our teachers (including a strong Dream Theater reading) and no less than 16 pages dedicated to gear with a special "Christmas" Groove Shop to spice up your gift list.
Enjoy your reading and have a great holiday season !
