Like Van Halen I, the first try of the Stray Cats, recorded in London under the direction of Dave Edmunds, had the impact of a small bomb. In the middle of the new wave, post-punk and heavy metal period, the magic trio allowed to refocus the debate by taking out of mothballs and modernizing a forgotten and outdated style: the pioneer rock'n'roll, the one of the 50s, the rockabilly of Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran. Like Van Halen I, the Stray Cats' first effort, recorded in London under the direction of Dave Edmunds, had the impact of a small bomb. A worldwide success soon confirmed by the return of a retro imagery adopted by the rock fans of the time. For guitarists too the impact was colossal and to say that Brian Setzer saved us is almost an understatement. Thanks to his incandescent guitar parts, mixing melody and virtuosity (sculpted with a big Gretsch hollow body, an overheated Fender amp and the authentic slapback of a tape echo), we were able to discover the geniuses Cliff Gallup (Blue Caps guitarist), Cochran, but also Les Paul, Chet Atkins, Charlie Christian (the jazz oldies were present from the beginning in the phrasing of the tomcat), and if the shock was so immediate, it is that Setzer mixes this language with other influences of his generation, closer to us, like Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page (use of the sustain and the bends), thing which will rather skin the ears of the purists. Today, Brian graces us with an absolutely giant new solo album, his twelfth, entitled Gotta Have the Rumble, a maxi shoot of enriched rockab', which illustrates a kind of synthesis of his complex and energetic playing, with the forty years of work and experience that make the difference. We are very proud to dedicate, for the second time, our cover to this great among the great, who granted us a beautiful interview.
Good reading and good guitar!"
